Traditional corner protectors are basically the same as the traditional corner caps. If you take a corner cap and remove a significant amount of material from the center of the cap, you are left with two corner protectors. This concept uses a lot less material than the corner cap design, and it is typically the least expensive foam protective concept. However, this concept does require eight caps to package a product, which sometimes can be a challenge to line up all the caps when getting your product packaged. You will have to determine if the savings on foam will warrant the time it takes to pack.
