This material is made by injecting thousands of polyethylene beads into a rectangular shaped mold. The beads expand outwardly inside a rectangular or special shaped mold until there is not any more room. It then expands inward until all the beads fuse together to create an Expanded Polyethylene Bun or special shape.
This material is not as easy to cut or shape, and it cannot be thermal sealed together. Hot melt adhesive is generally the method we use to assemble multiple pieces.
Expanded Polyethylene Buns are not made by many manufactures. So if there is an unfavorable change in the production of distribution, you will have to live with it. It is not a very competitive market.
With that being said, the automotive industry finds this material favorable because it is non-abrasive and is less expensive than crossllink.
EPE buns are most commonly maufactured in one size
6" thick x 48" wide x 96" long. Every thing is fabricated from this size.
Most common color is natural / white or black.
All EPE material comes in a wide variety of densities. 1.3, 1.5, 1.9, 2.3 and 2.8 pounds per cubic foot. The density of any foam is the main cost factor. The heavier the foam is, the higher the price will be.
PE foam is manufactured in four different grades:
Grade A -- Standard
Grade B -- Static Dissipative
Grade C -- Fire Retardant
Grade D -- Static Dissipative and Fire Retardant
